Opening Reception: a fun excursion to Galiano!

Last Saturday was very special: I joined a group of artists, got on a boat (a fast boat) and travelled to Galiano, another Southern Gulf Island, to attend the opening reception of the Saturna Artists Show at Insight Gallery. Fresh air, open water (vroom vroom, fast), a gorgeous sunny day, art, artists, connecting, networking, and munchies. Couldn’t ask for more! Without further ado, a little visual report of that day.

All too soon, it seems, it was time for our gang of artists to go home. And during the boat ride back to Saturna, the sunset was spectacularly enhanced by some interesting clouds… That is one of the big BC Ferries on the horizon, on its way to Victoria, on Vancouver Island.

Across the water, to Galiano Island!

Insight Galiano Show 2013
Last spring, artist and gallery owner Tish Saunders invited Saturna Island artists to show their work at Insight Art Gallery, on Galiano Island. We gladly accepted her invitation and several of us will be boating over to Galiano, to attend the opening on August 31. Poet Ellen McGinn will also do a reading during the opening, adding the magic of the spoken and written word.

I look forward to meeting Galiano artists and residents, and hope that this initiative leads to more inter-island cultural links.

Poetic Grasses – Photo Wednesday

I took this picture without thinking much about the result. It just happened.

Between the idea
And the reality
Between the motion
And the act
Falls the Shadow
For Thine is the Kingdom

Between the conception
And the creation
Between the emotion
And the response
Falls the Shadow
Life is very long

Between the desire
And the spasm
Between the potency
And the existence
Between the essence
And the descent

For Thine is the Kingdom

This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

Mysterious Iris

There is something about the iris.

When I got here, I inherited a fenced garden (the only way to have a garden around here, because of the abundant deer and goats that forage freely in the neighbourhood — more about that in an upcoming post)… with three flourishing groups of irises.
Iris mystery

I am not sure that I love them, but I still find them fascinating. When you look at an iris bloom up close, there is something almost menacing about the way the flower is put together… To me, it resembles some insect mandible…

Garden Close-Ups

Yesterday afternoon was absolutely glorious, sunny and warm. Every creature was enjoying the day.

After taking care of urgent things, like mowing the “lawn” (or what passes for a lawn in this garden), I noticed a big butterfly, really busy on a wallflower (Erysimum) and ran inside to get my camera. Lucky for me, that butterfly was intent on cleaning out every blossom… I had all the time in the world to capture it at work.

While looking at the rest of the afternoon’s pictures, I fell in love with the one below, of the poppies… And played with it in Photoshop. The result:
