Black & White

Taking an ordinary photo and turning it into a black and white version is a great way to start looking at how you compose a shot with value in mind. Value and contrast become the main actors.

So here is a water view of the Unique Brilliance, a cargo ship anchored on Plumper Sound, between Saturna and Pender Islands, for several weeks this summer.

Seen from the water level, a cargo ship is a veritable wall of rusty steel. In the late afternoon, I like the contrast of the anchor chain, and even rows of rivets show up.

I liked this exercise of translating my pics to black and white – to check out whether they remain “interesting” minus the colour – so much that I worked on a few pictures last weekend, and created a new Black and White photo gallery with the ones that “passed the B&W test”. Have a look!

Succulents – Photo Wednesday

I took a close look at my collection of succulents, while watering them today. Despite the much shorter days, and low light due to grey skies for several days in a row… some of them are blooming. These little pops of colour are a treat.

Succulent Echeveria Bloom WL

Above: Echeveria, doing its thing… This is the grand-child of my original Echeveria plant. It is very productive and keeps “popping” babies in its “armpits” (the bends in the plant’s main stem). I pull the babies out of the parent plant, they even come with starter roots. Very vigorous and accommodating, that Echeveria…

And this one, very dainty little thing.  Could be from the Euphorbia family, but I lost the tag, so won’t know the name until I return to that nursery and take a note of it. Meantime, I enjoyed discovering it in bloom today! Nice treat for November.

Saturday’s Eagle, Transformed

The other morning (well, Saturday morning, in fact…), an eagle landed on the “perch tree” in front of the house. I think it’s a young adult, because its head feathers are not quite all white.

So here is the eagle, straight out of the camera, so to speak.

Then, I decided to play with filters in Photoshop. Really simple play. And below, here is that same eagle, in a neon version. I quite like it.

I think he (or she) looks more serious, don’t you?
